In a culture where others constantly attempt to define individuals, how does one determine their identity for themselves?
Arun -
Son of the protagonist and an unvaryingly static character, Arun is one of the most content characters in the novel because even before the point where the novel begins to document this family's life, Arun's identity is already clearly defined. From a young age, our little known background on him hints that he has always invariably followed what is important to him. Growing up, he stood against opposition, whether it to be leading violent protests or quietly accepting his father's criticism. While his passionate activism falls far from his family's and culture's expectations, Arun demonstrates a quiet confidence and responsibility. His identity, though still gently bourgeoning as he ages, is his very own. He has managed, as few do, to resist pressure from his surroundings and instead reflect, think and listen to what his moral compass tells him what to do, and deliberately pursue the result.
